Copper Tungsten Tubing for EDM

Copper tungsten tubing can be used to EDM hole drill in all material types. Copper tungsten, because of it’s molecular composition tends to last longer during hole burning compared mostly to Brass.
One unique characteristic of copper tungsten is that it is ideal when small hole drilling through very hard materials such as Carbide and Tungsten. This is because it has a slower and more steady burn rate that will measure up stronger. When EDM holeburning through a depth to width ratio of greater than 100 to 1 this also tends to be ideal because a more controlled hole burn will leave a more accurate and straighter hole.

Single Hole Electrode Tubes vs. Multi-Channel Electrode Tubes
Another variable which determines the ultimate success of the electrode properly EDM Hole Burning through the material or work piece is if the Brass Electrode or Copper Electrode tube has a “single hole” or a “multi channeled hole” running directly through the ID or (Internal Diameter) of the electrode.
Basically put; in order for an electrode to perform the way it’s supposed to, it depends on the type of hole going through the center of the electrode. This type of hole has a few purposes. One purpose is to direct water or coolant through the center of the electrode. This keeps the entire length of the Brass or Copper Tube from overheating and burning up. If the electrode heats up too much it can become “soft” and warp thus not creating a straight line or a consistent and accurate EDM Hole.
The main reason that determines whether an EDM Electrode tube would have a “single hole” or a “multi-channel” / “coreless” hole is that when a hole is EDM Machined into a part it could be a “thru hole” or a “blind hole”. Blind holes are not drilled complete to the other side so a “slug” or a piece of material is still left untouched at the bottom of the hole.

Applications of Tungsten Copper Composites

Copper tungsten alloys are used where the combination of high heat resistance, high electrical and/or thermal conductivity, and low thermal expansion are needed. Some of the applications are in electric resistance welding, as electrical contacts, and as heat sinks. As contact material the alloy is resistant to erosion by electric arc. Tungsten copper alloys are also used in electrodes for electrical discharge machining and electrochemical machining.
The CuW75 tungsten copper alloy, with 75% of tungsten, is widely used in chip carriers, substrates, flanges and frames for power semiconductor devices. The high thermal conductivity of copper together with the low thermal expansion of tungsten allows thermal expansion matching to silicon, gallium arsenide, and some ceramics.
Copper Tungsten alloy with 70-90% of tungsten is used in liners of some specialty shaped charges. The penetration is enhanced by factor 1.3 against copper for homogeneous steel target, as both the density and the break-up time are increased. Tungsten powder based shaped charge liners are especially suitable for oil well completion. Other ductile metals can be used as binder in place of copper as well. Graphite can be added as lubricant to the powder.
The manufacturing process of Tungsten copper alloy is to press the refractory (tungsten or tungsten carbide), sinter the pressed compact at a high temperature, and infiltrate with copper. All of this is done under very closely controlled conditions. The mechanical and physical properties of Tungsten copper alloy vary with composition. The thermal and electrical conductivity increase with the amount of copper, while the hardness, strength, and resistance to mechanical wear increase with the amount of tungsten or tungsten carbide. Applications for Copper Tungsten Bar

1. Resistance welding electrode

Chromium Copper Alloy


Overview
Chromium copper alloys are high copper alloys, containing 0.6 to 1.2% Cr. The chromium copper alloys are used for their high strength, corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. The chromium copper alloys are age hardenable, which, in this case, means that a change in properties occurs at elevated temperature due to the precipitation of chromium out of the solid solution. The strength of fully aged chromium copper is nearly twice that of pure copper and its conductivity remains high at 85% IACS, or 85% that of pure copper. These high strength alloys retain their strength at elevated temperatures. The corrosion resistance of chromium copper alloys is better than that of pure copper because chromium improves the chemical properties of the protective oxide film. Chromium copper has excellent cold formability and good hot workability. It is used in applications such as resistance welding electrodes, seam welding wheels, switch gears, cable connectors, circuit breaker parts, molds, spot welding tips, and electrical and thermal conductors that require strength. Chromium copper alloys are designated as UNS C18050 through C18600, the cast alloys are C81400 through C81540.

Tungsten Copper Alloy Heat Sink

A heat sink uses its extended surfaces to increase the surface area in contact with the cooling fluid, the air for example. The term is not meant literally, as a heat sink does not have a "magical ability to absorb heat like a sponge and send it off to a parallel universe". Heat transfer theory helps explain practical aspects of how heat sinks work, and can also help to clear up common misconceptions and design mistakes. Approach air velocity, choice of material, fin (or other protrusion) design and surface treatment are some of the design factors which influence the thermal resistance, i.e. thermal performance, of a heat sink. One engineering application of heat sinks is in the thermal management of electronics, often computer CPU or graphics processors. For these, heat sink attachment methods and thermal interface materials also influence the eventual junction or die temperature of the processor(s). Theoretical, experimental and numerical methods can be used to determine a heat sink's thermal performance.
Tungsten Copper high performance composites are fabricated from carefully controlled porous tungsten that is vacuum infiltrated with molten copper. This results in a WCu composite that has high conductivity and a matched low thermal expansion for heat sinks.
The CuW75 tungsten copper alloy is used extensively in thermal mounting plates, chip carriers, flanges, and frames for high-power electronic devices. As a tungsten copper material, it's a composite, so both the thermal advantages of copper and the very low expansion characteristics of tungsten can be utilized.
The combination of tungsten & copper materials results in thermal expansion characteristics similar to those of silicone carbide, aluminum oxide, and beryllium oxide, used as chips and substrates. Because of tungsten copper's thermal conductivity and expansion characteristics, Tungsten copper alloy works well in densely packed circuits.

Tungsten Carbide Copper Rod
